Naomi Osaka advanced to the quarterfinals of the Japan Open on Wednesday after defeating defending champion Suzan Lamens despite struggling with an injury.

Osaka, the tournament’s top seed, claimed a 7-6 (8/6), 3-6, 6-2 win in Tokyo. The match marked her first singles tournament in Japan in three years.

She grew emotional on the court, holding back tears after hitting the final winning shot. The victory marked an important milestone in her return to competition on home soil.

Osaka’s performance earned strong support from local fans and underscored her determination to regain top form. Her next opponent in the quarterfinals will be announced as the tournament continues.

The Japan Open serves as both a professional test and a personal comeback for Osaka as she continues her recovery and pursuit of another title.
