MANILA, Philippines– The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) filed criminal complaints against Sarah and Curlee Discaya for allegedly evading ₱7.18 billion in taxes.
The case, filed on October 5, 2023, accuses the Discayas of violating Sections 254 and 255 of the National Internal Revenue Code of 1997. The charges involve their businesses, including St. Gerrard Construction.
According to the BIR, the alleged tax evasion covers fiscal years 2019, 2020, and 2021. An audit revealed discrepancies between the Discayas’ declared income and their companies’ actual financial transactions.
BIR officials stated that the complaints form part of a wider campaign against large-scale tax evasion. The agency seeks to recover the unpaid taxes and impose penalties in accordance with the law.
The BIR stressed the importance of accurate reporting and compliance to ensure fairness in the country’s tax system. It also urged other businesses to comply with tax regulations to avoid similar cases.
Representatives for Sarah and Curlee Discaya have not yet issued a public response. The case will move forward in court, where evidence will determine the outcome.
The BIR reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing individuals and entities suspected of tax evasion and to maintaining integrity within the country’s fiscal system.
