Houston Grand Opera has been selected as a finalist for the Opera Company of the Year at the 2025 International Opera Awards. The announcement came on Thursday, marking the opera company as the only American representative in this category.

Houston Grand Opera is one of the largest and most renowned opera entities in the United States. Since its inception, the company has produced 76 world premieres, initiated its own record label in 2025, and secured prominent awards, including a Tony, two Grammys, and three Emmys.

Historically, Houston Grand Opera has been the sole U.S. opera company to receive this honor three times, with previous nominations in 2017 and 2019. Other nominees for this year’s award include Deutsche Oper Berlin from Germany, GöteborgsOperan from Sweden, MusikTheater an der Wien from Austria, Opernhaus Zürich from Switzerland, and Teatro alla Scala from Italy.

The General Director and CEO of Houston Grand Opera, Khori Dastoor, expressed excitement over the nomination.

Dastoor stated, “This is an incredible day for our company and our city. Houston dreams big, and HGO shares those dreams with audiences through world-class opera that resonates far beyond our stage.”

The winners of the International Opera Awards will be announced on November 13 in Athens, Greece. The Greek National Opera will host the ceremony, and it will be available for viewing via livestream on OperaVision.

Khori Dastoor further noted, “This nomination not only reflects Houston’s place on the global opera map—but it’s also a testament to the extraordinary artists, administrators, board members, and supporters who make this work possible.”

For more information about the Houston Grand Opera and its achievements, interested individuals can visit the company’s official website.

Houston Grand Opera was founded in 1955 and has since grown into a major cultural institution in Houston, Texas. The company is known for its commitment to advancing the operatic art form and engaging diverse audiences through innovative productions and community outreach initiatives.

The International Opera Awards, established in 2013, recognize excellence in opera on a global scale. The awards aim to raise the profile of opera as an art form and provide recognition to those who have made significant contributions to the industry.
