A San Antonio man was recently arrested in connection with a cold case murder that remained unsolved for nearly two decades.

Authorities have identified the suspect as Saul Gonzalez, 66, who is now charged with the capital murder of Valerie Laguna. The case dates back to July 19, 2005, when the body of Laguna, who was nine months pregnant, was discovered at Cristo Rey Cemetery in Cotulla, Texas.

Gonzalez faces charges of capital murder after a grand jury indictment. He was taken into custody and is currently detained at the La Salle County Jail with a bond set at $1 million.

The case was revived through advanced forensic analysis techniques that were not available at the time of the initial investigation. These new methods allowed investigators to link Gonzalez to the crime scene, leading to his arrest.

Laguna’s death was particularly brutal. She was found to have been sexually assaulted, beaten, and strangled. Her unborn child also died as a result of the attack. The community of Cotulla was deeply affected by the tragedy, and the cold case has haunted both law enforcement and residents for years.

This arrest marks a significant development in a case that has been a point of concern for many, highlighting the enduring impact of violent crimes on communities and the importance of ongoing forensic advancements to solve cold cases.

Cotulla is a small town located in La Salle County, Texas. The case of Valerie Laguna and her unborn child has remained a somber chapter in the town’s history. With the arrest of Gonzalez, residents are hopeful for closure and justice for the victim and her family.

The ongoing investigation may reveal more details about the events leading up to the crime, as authorities continue to piece together evidence and testimonies related to the case.

The arrest underscores the effectiveness of modern forensic science in solving crimes that once seemed insurmountable. Authorities, forensic teams, and investigators are working closely to ensure that justice is served.

The arrest has brought a renewed focus on cold cases nationwide, emphasizing the role of technological advancements in criminal investigations. Many similar cases await breakthroughs that can bring about justice for victims and their families.

The La Salle County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies involved in the case have expressed their commitment to pursuing justice and supporting the victims’ families through this process.
