As the Houston metropolitan area continues to grow, adding diversity to its grocery retail landscape, H Mart, the acclaimed Korean-American supermarket chain, is poised to expand its presence in the bustling suburb of Sugar Land. Recent filings with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation reveal a $4.45 million project for a new 64,145-square-foot H Mart facility at 3665 N. Highway 6, a site previously occupied by Floor and Decor. Construction is slated to commence on August 18, with an anticipated completion date of March 31, 2026, marking another significant development in the region’s retail sector.

H Mart, founded in 1982 in Queens, New York, is recognized as the largest U.S. supermarket chain specializing in Asian foods, with approximately 100 locations nationwide. The brand name, Han Ah Reum, meaning “one arm full of groceries,” reflects its commitment to offering a wide range of Asian products to its customers. Houston’s first H Mart opened in 2008 in Spring Branch, catering to a community with a significant Korean population, followed by locations in Chinatown in 2015 and Katy Asian Town in 2018.

This potential expansion into Sugar Land aligns with a broader trend of major grocery chains, such as H-E-B, Sprouts Farmers Market, and Trader Joe’s, seeking to capture the growing consumer base in suburban Houston. Despite the lack of comment from H Mart regarding the new development, the project’s details underscore the chain’s strategic focus on expanding its footprint to better serve the evolving needs of the community.
