North Korea officially opened the Wonsan Kalma Coastal Tourist Area, a large resort on its east coast, on July 1, 2025, state media reported.

The resort, located in the Wonsan Kalma area, is a flagship tourism project led by Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un. It aims to attract both domestic visitors and, eventually, international tourists. The resort can accommodate about 20,000 guests.

The development includes hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, and a water park. Although the project experienced a six-year delay, it is now operational.

The opening forms part of North Korea’s broader effort to revive and expand its tourism sector amid ongoing economic difficulties. State media did not specify when foreign tourists will be allowed to visit, but reports indicate Russian visitors may arrive in the coming weeks.

North Korea has faced challenges in developing its tourism industry due to international sanctions and the global COVID-19 pandemic, which delayed the project.

South Korean media have compared the Wonsan Kalma Coastal Tourist Area to Hawaii’s Waikiki Beach, highlighting the scale of the investment. However, tour operators have expressed mixed opinions about its appeal to international tourists, especially from Western countries.

The state media broadcast the opening event, showcasing the completed facilities. The North Korean government expressed optimism that tourism will contribute to the country’s economic growth.
