MANILA, Philippines — Yeng Guiao will remain as Rain or Shine head coach through 2030 after the PBA team announced a contract extension on Thursday.
The Elasto Painters announced the deal through social media, posting a photo of Guiao with team executives, including co-owners Raymund Yu and Terry Que.
Guiao’s new contract will start in 2028 because he remains in the third year of his current five-year agreement with Rain or Shine.
The Elasto Painters hope Guiao can lead the team to its first PBA championship since winning the 2016 Commissioner’s Cup.
“The journey continues. And it’s not stopping anytime soon,” the team said.
Guiao builds young Rain or Shine core
Guiao returned to Rain or Shine in 2022 after spending six seasons with NLEX. The Elasto Painters have reached the semifinals in five of the six conferences since his return.
The veteran coach has also helped develop a young core featuring Adrian Nocum, Jhonard Clarito, Andrei Caracut and Santi Santillan.
Rain or Shine hopes the group can help the team advance beyond the semifinal round and contend for another championship.
Guiao first coached Rain or Shine from 2011 to 2016 and guided the franchise to two PBA titles, including its breakthrough championship in the 2012 Governors’ Cup.
Rain or Shine prepares for Governors’ Cup
The contract extension comes weeks before the PBA resumes its season-ending Governors’ Cup in October.
Rain or Shine also received a boost from the return of veteran Stanley Pringle and sophomore guard Felix Lemetti, who recently played in a tune-up game against the Korean Basketball League’s LG Sakers.
The Elasto Painters currently share the Group B lead with a 4-2 record.
