Two Minnesota lawmakers were victims of separate shootings in what authorities are treating as politically motivated attacks.
At approximately 2:00 a.m. CDT on Saturday, June 14, State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were shot at their home in Champlin, Minnesota. Both sustained injuries and were hospitalized; their conditions are reported to be stable.
Approximately 90 minutes later, former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed in a shooting at their Brooklyn Park residence.
The assailant, described as a white male with brown hair, was dressed in police-style gear and used a fake police SUV equipped with emergency lights.
The suspect fled on foot after exchanging gunfire with police and remains at large. Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, are actively investigating the incidents. A shelter-in-place order was issued in Brooklyn Park during the manhunt.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz condemned the attacks, calling them “an act of targeted political violence,” and emphasized the importance of peaceful political discourse.
President Donald Trump also condemned the violence, stating that the Department of Justice and the FBI are investigating the shootings.
