The Texas Senate approved legislation on May 15, to dismantle the Texas Lottery Commission, transferring its responsibilities to the Department of Licensing and Regulation. The bill now moves to the Texas House for further consideration.
The decision follows months of deliberations and scrutiny over issues related to online ticket sales and the regulation of lottery courier services. Lawmakers cited concerns about oversight and operational transparency in the current system.
As part of the legislation, the Sunset Advisory Committee will conduct a review to assess whether the Texas Lottery should be abolished entirely. The review is scheduled to be completed by August 2027.
