SAN ANTONIO — Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones voiced strong support for San Antonio’s rainbow crosswalks during a Pride rally in District 1, held in response to Governor Greg Abbott’s recent directive banning political markings on roads.
The event, which also marked the designation of San Antonio’s first Pride Cultural Heritage District, featured live performances and highlighted the LGBTQ+ community’s resilience.
Ortiz Jones, the city’s first openly LGBTQ+ mayor, said the crosswalks represent more than paint—they serve as symbols of identity and unity. She reassured attendees that the city would explore ways to preserve them despite the governor’s order.
A resolution to protect the rainbow crosswalks was introduced and signed by several city council members during the event, signaling local government support for the community.
