Austria took a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute through Romano Schmid, who finished a buildup play with a right-footed shot from outside the penalty area.
Jordan equalized in the 50th minute when Ali Olwan completed a counterattack run into the box and scored past goalkeeper Alexander Schlager.
Austria regained the lead in the 76th minute after a corner kick resulted in an own goal by Jordan defender Yazan Al Arab.
Marko Arnautovic scored Austria’s third goal from a penalty in stoppage time after a VAR review overturned an earlier decision that had ruled out a goal for a handball in the buildup.
Austria coach Ralf Rangnick said the match was difficult and described Jordan’s performance as strong in a post-match interview.
Jordan coach Jamal Sellami said his team aimed to play aggressively and create scoring opportunities in its World Cup debut.
Austria last won a World Cup match in 1990, while Jordan became the first debutant team in this tournament since Senegal in 2002 to play its opening match without a win.
