Demolition work has started on a section of the White House East Wing to make room for a new ballroom.

The development moves forward even though President Donald Trump had previously assured that the addition would not disturb the historic structure.

The White House, an enduring symbol of U.S. political leadership, has undergone multiple renovations through the decades.

President Trump introduced the ballroom project as part of his plan to enhance the White House campus. He had stated that the expansion would remain unobtrusive and would not involve alterations to the existing structure.

The removal of part of the East Wing contradicts that earlier assurance.

The East Wing has historically held offices for the First Lady’s staff and housed various administrative operations. Officials have not disclosed which specific portion is being taken down.

The concept of a White House ballroom is not new. Previous administrations explored the idea but did not proceed, largely due to historic preservation and cost concerns.

The construction is expected to be substantial and costly. The government has yet to release the project budget or timeline.
