Filipinos laud Google for featuring ‘West PH Sea’ label

MANILA, Philippines– Social media users and officials across the Philippines noticed that the term “West Philippine Sea” began appearing prominently on Google Maps, marking the water stretch west of the Philippine archipelago.

The visibility of the label on Google Maps sparked celebration as it is seen by many as an affirmation of the Philippines’ sovereign rights over the 270-kilometer area amidst ongoing territorial claims by China.

Google issued a statement clarifying that the label for the West Philippine Sea has always existed on its maps but has now become easily visible at additional zoom levels.

Philippine officials expressed satisfaction with the change, highlighting its geopolitical significance in reinforcing the country’s claim against competing territorial assertions.

The West Philippine Sea, a part of the South China Sea, has been a subject of territorial disputes involving several nations, with ongoing tensions particularly between the Philippines and China.

This labeling on Google Maps resonates with the Philippines’ stance on its maritime rights, as supported by the Permanent Court of Arbitration ruling in 2016, which invalidated China’s expansive claims in the region.

The enhancement of the label’s visibility comes at a time when discussions on maritime boundaries and territorial sovereignty in the South China Sea have been increasingly crucial.

Despite Google’s clarification, the update on the map has garnered attention and triggered discussions about digital representations of geopolitical boundaries.

The change on Google Maps also aligns with the Philippine government’s efforts to assert its territorial claims in international forums.
