Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced $26 million in state funding for Weslaco’s Mid Valley Airport. The funding aims to expand the airport’s capabilities and boost economic growth in the Rio Grande Valley.

Governor Abbott made the announcement, emphasizing the importance of airport growth for community success. The governor compared the potential impact of this expansion to the economic contributions of airports in Dallas and Austin.

The governor signed two proclamations allocating funds for key projects at the airport. These projects focus on enhancing the airport’s infrastructure to accommodate larger aircraft and increased traffic.

Abbott stated that the expansion will be a significant stimulant for economic growth in the area. He acknowledged the role of the legislature in securing the funds, expressing gratitude for their support.

Weslaco Mayor Adrian Gonzalez highlighted the benefits of the airport expansion. He noted that the improvements will enhance the city’s emergency response capabilities and attract more businesses to the region.

Mayor Gonzalez mentioned that during the COVID-19 pandemic, the airport played a critical role. Supplies were brought in through the airport, showcasing the need for bigger planes to land.

Mid Valley Airport is an essential hub for state and federal emergency operations. It serves as a strategic point for the Texas National Guard and the Department of Public Safety, particularly during natural disasters and border security missions.

State Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa, representing Senate District 20, spoke about the increased commercial traffic. He noted the presence of DPS planes and an armory, which will contribute to the area’s growth.

State Senator Adam Hinojosa, of District 27, stressed the importance of improving emergency response in a flood-prone region. He highlighted the need for timely responses and evacuation capabilities.

Mayor Gonzalez mentioned that the upcoming meeting will focus on details like timelines and project specifics. This will be the beginning of the work at the airport.

The event concluded with Mayor Gonzalez presenting Governor Abbott with the key to the city. This gesture recognized the governor’s contributions to the Rio Grande Valley.
