SAN ANTONIO — Victor Wembanyama will lead the San Antonio Spurs into Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Wednesday as the team faces the New York Knicks in a championship series featuring two franchises pursuing a title in different eras of drought.
Wembanyama said the NBA championship represents a long-standing personal goal as he prepares for his first Finals appearance since entering the league as the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.
He said winning the Larry O’Brien Trophy represents a lifelong ambition and described reaching the Finals as a major opportunity in his career.
The Spurs improved from 22 wins in Wembanyama’s rookie season to 34 wins in his second year before finishing with 62 wins this season.
San Antonio advanced to the Finals after defeating the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder in a seven-game Western Conference Finals series.
The Knicks reached the Finals after sweeping the Cleveland Cavaliers 4–0 in the Eastern Conference Finals.
New York last won an NBA championship in 1973 and enters the series after winning two of three regular-season meetings against San Antonio, including an NBA Cup final victory in December.
Knicks guard Jalen Brunson has averaged nearly 27 points per game in the playoffs.
Knicks coach Mike Brown said the Spurs present a difficult matchup, citing their coaching, roster depth, and Wembanyama’s performance.
Game 1 will take place in San Antonio.
