NEW YORK — San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama was targeted by jeering fans and an object thrown outside his hotel on Wednesday night following the team’s Game 4 loss to the New York Knicks, according to a video circulating online and a statement from police.
A video posted on social media showed at least one egg being thrown toward Wembanyama as he arrived at his hotel, where he was escorted by security after the game. The video showed fans gathered outside the building, several blocks from Madison Square Garden.
The footage showed the object striking a street sign near the entrance before Wembanyama turned toward a person near the doorway and then entered the hotel.
It was not immediately clear who threw the egg, and the San Antonio Spurs did not provide immediate confirmation of whether Wembanyama was struck.
The incident occurred after the Spurs lost Game 4 to the Knicks in a game in which they surrendered a 29-point lead. Wembanyama missed two free throws in the final minutes of the game.
Following the loss, celebrations in New York included large crowds gathering in the streets, fireworks, and reports of confrontations with police.
The New York Police Department said 56 people were arrested on charges including assault and disorderly conduct in connection with postgame activity. The department said it had no report on file specifically related to the egg incident.
