A newly released video captures the aftermath of an officer-involved shooting that occurred Thursday evening in South Austin.
The incident took place at Thundercloud Subs on Slaughter Lane and Manchaca Road, resulting in the death of the suspect and a bystander being wounded by gunfire.
Police had identified the suspect as wanted for multiple burglaries and a gun-involved home invasion. When approached, the suspect drew a gun from his waistband but was subdued by a bystander.
The suspect was shot and ultimately killed by police.
Footage from a neighboring business, Accent Trophies and Awards, recorded the moments following the shooting. Around 5:26 p.m., the owner, unaware of the danger, stepped outside, narrowly escaping injury as a bullet passed through his business wall and ricocheted off a metal bar on his desk, missing him by inches.
The bystander who had intervened was shot in the shoulder but is reported to be in stable condition, according to Austin Police Department (APD).
Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis stated at a press conference, “It’s alarming when such violence occurs in a public area where people gather for dinner, haircuts, and sandwiches. Our priority is to maintain safety for Austin’s residents, especially against violent offenders.”
The officers involved in the shooting are currently on administrative leave, and it remains undetermined if the suspect discharged their weapon during the incident.
APD announced plans to release video footage and additional materials in a press conference scheduled for next week.
