DALLAS, Texas – Verizon on Thursday warned customers in Dallas and other U.S. cities about scam text messages claiming to offer a $20 refund or credit related to a recent wireless service outage.
The messages instruct recipients to click a link or provide personal information, but Verizon stressed that no action is needed to receive the credit. The $20 credit applies automatically to eligible accounts and will appear on upcoming bills.
Scammers may send texts from local or unknown numbers, referencing refunds, rebates, or compensation. Verizon advised customers to delete suspicious messages and avoid replying, even with words like “STOP,” to prevent confirming an active number.
Customers can report scam messages by forwarding them to 7726 (“SPAM”) and should contact Verizon immediately if they clicked a link or shared sensitive information. Affected customers should also alert their bank or card issuer if payment details were exposed.
Verizon said its security teams are monitoring the situation, cooperating with law enforcement, and encouraging users to verify any unexpected message directly through the official Verizon website or mobile app.
The company emphasized that both individual and business accounts may be targeted and urged vigilance while reviewing billing details and credits online.
