The report, cited in the analysis, projected that rising temperatures could expose athletes, officials, workers, and fans to heat stress during the 104 scheduled matches. It identified cities including Dallas and Houston in Texas, as well as Miami, Atlanta, and Kansas City, as locations where “feels-like” temperatures could exceed 90°F (32°C).

The study, conducted by World Weather Attribution, estimated that about 26 matches could take place under conditions that exceed safety thresholds used by the global players’ union, the International Federation of Professional Footballers’ Associations (FIFPRO). It also projected that nine matches could occur in stadiums without cooling systems.

FIFPRO guidelines state that Wet Bulb Globe Temperature levels at or above 26°C (78.8°F) require cooling breaks, while levels at or above 28°C (82.4°F) are considered unsafe for play and may require postponement. The report said approximately five matches could reach or exceed that higher threshold.

FIFA currently mandates match-day mitigation measures when temperatures reach 32°C (89.6°F), a higher cutoff than FIFPRO’s recommendation. The organization has implemented hydration breaks during matches and announced additional measures, including misting stations, cooling tents, and hydration areas for fans.

FIFA has also created a Heat Illness Mitigation and Management Task Force to develop heat-risk alerts, medical protocols, and operational responses ahead of the tournament.

The 2026 World Cup will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, with matches scheduled during the Northern Hemisphere summer, a period that has previously raised concerns over extreme heat in international football tournaments.

Meta said it opened registration for America’s Workforce Academy, which will operate in Houston, Texas; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Indianapolis, Indiana; and Columbus, Ohio. The program will train participants in skilled trades, including electrical, mechanical, and fiber installation work, and will prepare them for certification through the National Center for Construction Education and Research.

The company said the program will be free for participants and will include a job guarantee for graduates. Meta described the initiative as a $115 million first-year investment and said it represents a major private-sector effort to expand workforce training in the skilled trades.

Meta vice president of data centers Rachel Peterson said the program responds to demand for workers needed to build artificial intelligence infrastructure. She said the industry requires electricians, mechanics, and fiber technicians to support data center development.

The National Urban League and the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce are among the organizations partnering with Meta on the initiative, along with Associated Builders and Contractors and Workforce Solutions Borderplex.

National Urban League president Marc H. Morial said the program provides industry credentials and removes cost barriers for participants. Mike Rowe, an advocate for skilled trades training, said the initiative allows participants to earn pay while learning and receive job placement after certification.

Meta said it cannot yet specify how many jobs the Houston program will create. The company said the academy expands on its LevelUp initiative, which focuses on training fiber installation workers and received 35,000 applications within its first week.

The interview follows the release of Justice Department documents that raised new questions about Gates’ contacts with Epstein. Other prominent figures, including Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, and Howard Lutnick, have also appeared before the committee.

A spokesperson for Gates said he welcomed the opportunity to testify and maintained that he “never witnessed or participated in Epstein’s illegal conduct.”

Among the documents under review is a reported 2013 draft email in which Epstein allegedly suggested he had helped Gates manage issues related to extramarital affairs. Gates has denied the allegations and described the email as fake.

Reports indicate that Melinda French Gates expressed concerns about the relationship as early as 2013, though Gates continued contact with Epstein for at least another year.

The House Oversight Committee is examining Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell as part of a broader investigation into the government’s handling of the case and the release of related records.

Democratic lawmakers have said they plan to question Gates about what he knew regarding Epstein’s activities and the extent of their relationship.

The interview is expected to be conducted privately and will not be videotaped. Reports also indicate that Gates has retained legal and congressional experts to assist with his preparation for the questioning.

The funding includes support for programs aimed at improving reproductive health services and strengthening health systems for women, particularly in low-resource settings.

French Gates also allocated $40 million to Co-Impact to support an initiative that integrates mental health services into maternal and primary health care programs, with a focus on Africa.

An additional $10 million will go to The Menopause Society to expand education for health care providers and improve access to menopause-related care in the United States.

French Gates said the investments are intended to address gaps in funding for women’s health issues and encourage additional support from other donors and governments.

“The role of philanthropy, in my opinion, is to look at some of these societal problems that have been left behind,” she said in remarks to The Associated Press.

She said the goal is to highlight underfunded areas, demonstrate possible solutions, and attract broader support from other funders and public institutions.

The latest commitment brings French Gates’ total philanthropic giving for women’s health initiatives to more than $600 million over the past two years.

French Gates, who co-founded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, has focused increasingly on women’s health and education since stepping back from the organization’s leadership in 2024.

The report also revised employment figures upward for March and April. Employers added 214,000 jobs in March, an increase of 29,000 from the previous estimate, while April’s total rose by 64,000 to 179,000 jobs. Together, the revisions added 93,000 more jobs to the two-month total.

The leisure and hospitality sector recorded the largest monthly increase, adding 70,000 jobs in May. The gain significantly exceeded the sector’s average monthly increase of 14,000 jobs over the previous year.

Restaurants and drinking establishments accounted for 48,000 of the new jobs in the leisure and hospitality industry.

Government employment increased by 55,000 jobs during the month, driven largely by hiring in local government positions outside the education sector.

The health care sector added 35,000 jobs in May, consistent with its average monthly growth of 38,000 jobs over the past year. Ambulatory health care services contributed 26,000 jobs, while home health care providers added 11,000 positions. Hospitals also expanded employment, adding 6,000 jobs.

In contrast, employment in the financial sector declined by 22,000 jobs during the month. The industry has lost 107,000 jobs since reaching its most recent peak a year ago. The largest declines occurred in commercial banking, insurance carriers, and related financial activities.

The May employment report indicates continued labor market growth despite slower hiring in some sectors and a stable unemployment rate.

The incident occurred one day after a wolf died of natural causes at the zoo in northwest Indiana, according to the Michigan City Police Department and the Michigan City Parks and Recreation Department.

Officials said an incident involving other wolves and animal care staff took place following the wolf’s death. They reported that all individuals involved were in stable condition.

According to reports by local media outlets, two zookeepers were attacked by two wolves inside an exhibit at Washington Park Zoo.

One employee, 39, suffered bite wounds to her neck and limbs before escaping the enclosure, according to reports. Responders from the Michigan City Fire Department found her outside the enclosure with severe injuries and multiple bite wounds.

A second zookeeper sustained a bite wound to the forearm while inside the enclosure. Reports said the employee climbed onto the roof of a structure within the exhibit and remained there until firefighters removed the individual using a ladder.

Authorities did not immediately release additional details about how the attack occurred or whether the wolves involved would be relocated or removed from the exhibit.

The officer, identified as Christian Castro of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), was taken into custody in Cameron County, Texas, near the Mexico border. He had been wanted on charges of assault and filing a false report related to the shooting of Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis.

Prosecutors in Hennepin County, Minnesota, allege that Castro fired through the front door of a home and struck Sosa-Celis in the thigh while pursuing another individual during “Operation Metro Surge,” a federal immigration crackdown in the Minneapolis area.

Authorities say the incident occurred on January 14 during a chaotic confrontation outside a duplex where Sosa-Celis and another man were present. Both individuals were described by prosecutors as legally in the United States.
