Taylor Averill and Erik Shoji of the USA Volleyball team expressed their heartfelt appreciation for the warm reception they received during their debut in Manila at the Volleyball Nations League (VNL). Despite their defeat against Japan in straight sets at the Mall of Asia Arena, the American athletes were overwhelmed by the enthusiastic support of Filipino fans.

Averill, visibly moved by the experience, donned a Team Philippines jacket during their warmup session, a gesture that resonated deeply with local supporters. “I’m so honored. This is the coolest jacket. Such a cool token to have of appreciation and I’m blessed to wear it,” Averill shared, emphasizing the significance of the gesture from Filipino fans.

Speaking about the passionate fan base in Manila, Averill expressed his gratitude. “You guys don’t understand. In the States, we don’t get this kind of love for what we do so it means a lot to me. I don’t take it for granted,” he added, acknowledging the unique atmosphere that Filipino volleyball enthusiasts brought to the games.

Despite Team USA finishing with a 5-7 record and missing out on the Final Eight, Averill remained upbeat about their Manila experience. “I’m so excited to come back here. I’ve had way too much fun here. The volleyball community here is like nothing I’ve ever experienced. I’m just so grateful,” he exclaimed, highlighting his fondness for Manila and its vibrant volleyball scene.

Erik Shoji, the American libero, echoed Averill’s sentiments, describing Manila’s VNL experience as one of their best. “It’s the best experience that I think we’ve had in the VNL in a while. Obviously, we wanted to win but the crowd was awesome,” Shoji remarked, appreciating the intense atmosphere created by Filipino fans.

Looking ahead, Averill extended an invitation to Filipino supporters to continue backing Team USA, especially during the upcoming Paris Olympics and the FIVB Men’s World Championship in 2025. “Don’t be afraid to support us from afar this Olympics. We would appreciate your support. Otherwise, we’ll see you guys next year. Thank you so much. I love you guys,” he concluded warmly.

As the VNL in Manila concludes, Averill and Shoji’s words reflect not only their admiration for Filipino hospitality but also the enduring bond between international athletes and their passionate supporters in the Philippines.
