U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will travel to Malaysia this week in his first official visit to Asia since assuming the post, his office confirmed Monday.
The trip, which begins on Tuesday, includes meetings with member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and marks a key step in the Biden administration’s ongoing diplomatic engagement with the Asia-Pacific region.
Rubio, who also holds the role of U.S. National Security Advisor, is expected to engage in bilateral and multilateral discussions focusing on regional security, trade, and economic cooperation.
The U.S. Department of State stated that the visit is part of efforts to reinforce America’s commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific.
The Secretary of State will meet with top officials from various ASEAN countries during the trip. Topics on the agenda include maritime security, economic partnerships, climate cooperation, and addressing emerging global challenges.
ASEAN, composed of ten Southeast Asian countries, plays a central role in fostering regional dialogue and economic collaboration.
Additional details regarding bilateral engagements with specific ASEAN member states are expected to be released as the trip progresses.
Rubio’s presence at the ASEAN meetings underscores the United States’ efforts to deepen cooperation on shared priorities and to uphold regional peace and economic resilience in the Indo-Pacific.
