Amidst numerous allegations of corruption surrounding infrastructure projects, the Student Council from the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman devised a unique way for people to express their frustrations: a run.

The UP College of Science Student Council is organizing an event for Filipinos from all backgrounds—particularly runners—to raise awareness against corruption amidst ongoing investigations and allegations regarding infrastructure projects.

The Takbo Laban sa Korapsyon (Run for Accountability) fun run is scheduled for Sunday, September 7, from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the UP Academic Oval, a popular spot for runners in the area.

Aimee Ramos, a project staff member for the event, stated that they anticipate at least a thousand participants. By Saturday evening, 300 individuals had officially registered, with an additional 600 from partner organizations.

Partner organizations include Bayan and the science advocacy group Agham. Registration on-site will begin at 6 a.m., followed by a brief program before the event starts. Ramos mentioned the event is open to everyone and free, although they welcome donations.

The UP Runners Club will lead a 15-minute warm-up session before the run. Participants can choose between two distances: 2.5 kilometers and 5.5 kilometers.

The route begins at Quezon Hall. For the 2.5 km distance, it involves one lap around the UP Oval, while the 5.5 km distance involves two laps.

To motivate participants, the student council has planned an engaging activity.

“During the route, some individuals will dress as contractors and participate in a playful run, seeming to invite pursuit from runners,” Ramos explained.

Organizers will distribute running bibs to participants with messages like “Ayaw ko sa Korap!” (I don’t want corruption!) and other anti-corruption slogans. At the finish line, participants can step on images of various officials and contractors laid on the ground, including images of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Senate President Francis Escudero, and former Public Works Secretary Manuel Bonoan.

“This effort is part of our campaign to combat corruption, particularly with flood control and other infrastructure projects,” Ramos said. “It’s vital to highlight that the nation’s situation remains unchanged since Marcos’s father’s era, particularly regarding corruption.”

Organizers will also invite participants to the September 21 mobilization, coinciding with the anniversary of the declaration of martial law. Interested individuals can register through the Facebook page of the UP College of Science Student Council.
