WASHINGTON — U.S. officials announced Wednesday that the military seized two oil tankers, the Marinera and the Sophia, citing links to Venezuela.
Authorities said the operation was conducted under federal authority and in coordination with agencies responsible for enforcing sanctions and monitoring international shipping. Officials did not disclose the exact locations of the seizures or the timelines of the operation.
The vessels had been under observation for suspected involvement in transporting Venezuelan oil. U.S. agencies cited prior monitoring of ship movements, cargo documentation, and ownership records as part of the decision to seize the tankers.
Officials said the operation aligns with ongoing measures targeting commercial networks connected to Venezuela’s oil exports. The Marinera and Sophia will remain under U.S. control while federal authorities review ownership, cargo history, and charter contracts.
Government officials did not specify the cargo volumes, crew nationalities, or current conditions on the tankers. No injuries were reported during the operation. Authorities said crews will be subject to standard legal and immigration procedures based on individual circumstances.
