WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Education is reducing its workforce by more than 1,300 positions as part of a strategy to streamline operations.

Officials confirmed the cuts, which include approximately 600 voluntary resignations or retirements, will contribute to the downsizing effort.

The department stated the move aims to reallocate resources efficiently and focus on key priorities. Despite the staff reduction, the department remains committed to maintaining educational services. It plans to incorporate technological advancements to maintain program effectiveness.

Details about which divisions or programs will be impacted have not been disclosed, but the department is expected to prioritize areas aligned with its goals, including those affecting student outcomes and educational equity.

The department has acknowledged the impact on employees and is providing support to assist those affected by the layoffs. Resources are being offered to help displaced workers transition to new employment.
