Residents of the Philippines’ capital, Manila, were forced to evacuate as floodwaters from Typhoon Carina inundated homes and villages.
Village officials reported that floodwaters had reached the second floor of many homes due to the relentless heavy rains brought by Typhoon Carina.
Carina, with maximum sustained winds of 155 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts of up to 190 kph, was moving towards Taiwan, according to the Philippines’ state weather agency in a 5 a.m. bulletin. While the typhoon did not make landfall, it intensified the southwest monsoon, leading to heavy to intense rainfall in northern Philippines.
