TxDOT raises alarm over toll text scam affecting Texas drivers

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has issued a warning regarding a growing scam targeting TxTag users.

Numerous customers have reported receiving fraudulent text messages claiming that they have unpaid toll balances.

The scam encourages recipients to click on a link to resolve the alleged balance, posing a significant risk of exposing personal and financial information to scammers.

TxDOT emphasizes that legitimate communications regarding toll balances will never request personal information through unsolicited messages or links. They strongly advise customers not to engage with these fraudulent messages. Instead, drivers are urged to verify any claims of outstanding balances by visiting the official TxTag website or contacting customer service directly.

The scam is an organized effort to exploit drivers who use the TxTag electronic toll collection system.

Scammers mimic the language and appearance of official communications, making it difficult for some individuals to distinguish genuine messages from fraudulent ones.

TxDOT is investigating the sources of these messages and has increased efforts to inform the public about how to recognize and avoid these types of scams.

Affected customers have reported that the scam texts often use urgent language, such as “past due” or “immediate action required,” to create a sense of panic and prompt hasty decisions.

Authorities are urging the public to report any suspicious messages and to remain cautious when receiving unsolicited requests for personal or financial information.

Law enforcement agencies are collaborating with TxDOT to track down the perpetrators.
