Texas Department of Transportation will temporarily close several flyovers at the interchange of Interstate 35 and US Highway 290 in Austin starting at 8 p.m. Tuesday for bridge joint repairs, with all lanes expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Wednesday.
The closures will affect the westbound US 290 East to southbound I-35 flyover, as well as both the southbound and northbound I-35 connections to eastbound US 290. These repairs focus on bridge joints, which are essential components that allow structures to expand and contract safely with temperature changes.
This follows similar repair work in the same area about a month ago, after viral social media posts raised concerns about visible “gaps” in the flyovers. At the time, TxDOT reassured the public that the structures were safe, though it’s unclear whether this latest round of work is a continuation of earlier repairs or addresses new issues.
Drivers should expect detours and delays overnight. Westbound US 290 traffic heading to I-35 will be redirected via the I-35/Waco exit, while both northbound and southbound I-35 drivers will use the RM 2222 exit to reconnect with US 290. TxDOT says detour signs will be in place and warns that additional closures could be scheduled if needed.
