TxDOT research inspires new passenger rail idea for Central Texas

AUSTIN — The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is urging state and local officials to consider expanding public transportation between Austin and San Antonio, including a potential passenger rail line along the I-35 corridor.

According to the study, a commuter rail service could reduce traffic congestion on I-35 by as much as 25%, providing an alternative to the heavily traveled highway. While the study outlines projected infrastructure costs, it does not identify specific funding sources for construction, stations, or operations.

The proposal is part of the Statewide Multimodal Transit Plan, which focuses on enhancing connectivity and accessibility across Texas. Travis County has also approved a feasibility study for the commuter rail, citing anticipated traffic increases due to ongoing highway construction.

Officials say the project could offer residents and travelers between the two cities a more efficient transportation option.

TxDOT’s report evaluates travel demand, potential costs, and engineering designs for the rail line. The study supports broader strategies, including Project Connect and the “Connecting Texas 2050” vision, both aimed at addressing future mobility needs through multimodal solutions.
