Trump comments on New York City mayoral race

President Donald Trump addressed the New York City mayoral race during an interview on 60 Minutes, drawing attention for his decision not to endorse Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.

Instead, Trump criticized Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani, calling him a “communist.”

Trump’s decision not to endorse Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels and a known public safety advocate, introduced a new dynamic to the race. Sliwa, who has long been active in city politics, continues his campaign without the formal backing of the former president.

Trump’s influence remains significant among certain voter groups, and his absence from the Sliwa campaign could affect the Republican candidate’s momentum.

During the interview, Trump directed his remarks toward Mamdani, a Democratic Assemblyman from Queens who promotes progressive policies on housing, healthcare, and policing.

Mamdani’s campaign aligns with the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, which has gained visibility in recent elections. Trump’s characterization of Mamdani highlighted his opposition to progressive political movements.

The New York City mayoral race continues amid ongoing debates on public safety, economic recovery, and housing affordability. Both candidates have emphasized these issues as priorities.

Sliwa has focused on crime prevention and law enforcement, while Mamdani advocates structural reforms and affordable housing initiatives.

The election carries broader implications beyond New York City. As one of the most prominent municipal offices in the United States, the mayor’s seat often reflects national political trends in major urban centers.

Voters will decide in the coming weeks which candidate’s platform—focused on reform or public safety—will guide the city’s governance in the next term.
