WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump began a diplomatic trip to Asia while the U.S. government remains in a partial shutdown caused through an unresolved budget dispute, opening the tour with a scheduled meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
On Saturday, Trump met the emir and the prime minister of Qatar on Air Force One during a refueling stop, reflecting continued engagement with a Gulf ally. Officials have not released information on the subjects discussed during the meeting.
The White House said Trump’s meeting with Xi will address trade and security issues affecting U.S.–China relations. The talks take place amid an ongoing trade dispute involving tariffs and countermeasures between the two countries.
The shutdown, which has furloughed federal workers and halted some government services, continues as Congress and the administration remain unable to reach agreement on spending.
Trump’s schedule in Asia includes additional meetings with regional leaders to discuss security and economic matters relevant to U.S. interests in the Asia-Pacific.
