WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump announced early Thursday that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife were captured by United States forces in a coordinated overnight military operation.

Officials described the action as targeted and reported no injuries to U.S. personnel.

The Pentagon confirmed the operation involved air and special operations units, though the exact location in Venezuela and the timing of the mission have not been disclosed. Maduro and his wife are currently in U.S. custody.

Trump stated that the United States will “run” Venezuela temporarily, but no detailed plan for interim governance, elections, or administration of Venezuelan institutions has been released. It remains unclear how judicial, legislative, or civil authorities in Venezuela will operate under U.S. control, or whether any local leaders have consented to this arrangement.

The State Department has not published a full policy on the next steps, and regional governments are seeking more information. International organizations and human rights groups are reviewing the legal and sovereignty implications, while analysts examine compliance with international law.

U.S. Congress members have requested classified briefings on the operation, questioning the legal authority, rules of engagement, and potential risks for Americans in Venezuela. Committees are likely to hold hearings on the policy and operational decisions behind the raid.
