President Donald Trump announced on Friday the end of deportation protections for Somali immigrants in Minnesota.

The move removes temporary protections that had allowed some Somali nationals to remain in the United States.

The policy targeted individuals who had been allowed to stay under protections related to unsafe or unstable conditions in Somalia. Trump emphasized Minnesota because it has one of the largest Somali communities in the country. Citizens and lawful permanent residents are not affected.

The change shifts federal enforcement priorities. Somali immigrants who previously had protection may now face deportation if found without lawful status. Federal agencies will review cases individually under existing immigration law.

The number of Somali immigrants affected in Minnesota has not been publicly disclosed, and outcomes will depend on individual circumstances, including pending asylum claims or other relief applications.
