WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday announced plans to construct a walkway called a “Trump promenade” linking the Lincoln Memorial to the Potomac River.
Trump made the announcement during remarks in the Oval Office, where he said the proposed walkway would extend from the memorial toward the river and include an overpass across nearby roadways.
“They want to call it the Trump Promenade,” Trump said. “I don’t know if I want to do that, but it’s going to be beautiful.”
Trump said the project would connect the memorial more directly to the river, stating that earlier plans for the site included a river-facing entrance.
“It’s going to take the Lincoln Memorial right down to the Potomac, which it was always scheduled to do,” he said.
The announcement followed recent completion of work to refill the Reflecting Pool near the memorial after a resurfacing project on the National Mall.
Trump also displayed a chart comparing the size of the Reflecting Pool to several skyscrapers during public remarks this week.
The administration has undertaken multiple construction and renovation projects in Washington since Trump returned to office, including work on national monuments and plans for additional infrastructure near the White House and federal buildings.
Those efforts also include the ongoing construction of a large ballroom at the White House and a proposed triumphal arch in the capital.
Some projects have faced legal and administrative challenges, including a court ruling requiring removal of Trump’s name from materials at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The center has since directed staff to remove references to his name from official materials.
The White House ballroom project has also drawn scrutiny over funding and security proposals, according to officials and lawmakers.
The administration has not released a timeline or detailed budget for the proposed “Trump promenade.”
