The Trump administration has moved to block a lower court’s order requiring the immediate release of full federal food assistance benefits to about 42 million Americans.

The Justice Department has asked the Supreme Court to suspend the ruling.

The lower court’s decision mandates the government to expedite the distribution of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to qualified recipients. The order affects millions who rely on the program for essential food support.

SNAP, formerly the Food Stamp Program, helps low-income families and individuals afford basic meals. The lower court’s ruling came amid rising concerns about food insecurity and economic hardship.

The Justice Department’s appeal signals the administration’s intent to manage aid distribution in line with its fiscal and policy priorities. The request urges the Supreme Court to halt adjustments to SNAP benefits while the matter undergoes review.

The Supreme Court’s decision could have major consequences for millions depending on SNAP for food security.

The administration’s action continues its broader effort to review and modify national aid programs to align with its stated goals of efficiency and targeted distribution.
