MANIL, Philippines — A tragic incident unfolded at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) Terminal 1 when a sport utility vehicle (SUV) unexpectedly crashed into the entrance of the departure area, resulting in the deaths of two individuals, including a five-year-old girl. The accident, which occurred around 8 a.m. on Sunday, also left four others injured. The driver, identified as Leo Gonzales, is currently in police custody as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has responded by suspending Gonzales’ driver’s license for 90 days and issuing a show-cause order for both the vehicle’s registered owner and the driver to explain the incident. Initial reports indicated that Gonzales claimed a sedan passing in front of him caused him to panic, mistakenly accelerating instead of braking. However, CCTV footage reviewed by investigators showed no evidence of a sedan in the vicinity at the time.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon, who visited the scene, confirmed the fatalities and emphasized the ongoing investigation, which includes reviewing all available footage and subjecting the driver to a mandatory drug test. The Department of Transportation (DOTr), in collaboration with the Manila International Airport Authority, has committed to providing assistance to the victims and their families, including covering hospital expenses.

The incident has sparked a broader review of road safety protocols, with Dizon announcing the formation of a special task force to evaluate existing policies, especially concerning large vehicles. This initiative follows a noticeable increase in road accidents during the recent Holy Week break, underscoring the urgent need for improved safety measures.

Secretary Dizon called for public sensitivity, urging individuals not to share images or videos of the incident online, out of respect for the victims’ families. The DOTr remains vigilant in its efforts to improve road safety and prevent future tragedies, reinforcing the importance of comprehensive driver training and stringent safety practices.
