The University of North Texas in Denton will begin offering free tuition to eligible Texas families starting in the fall 2026 semester, the university announced in a press release.
University officials said the program will cover tuition costs for qualifying undergraduate students who are Texas residents and who enroll at the University of North Texas in or after the fall 2026 term. The initiative will apply only to tuition and will not automatically cover fees, housing, meals, books, or other education-related expenses.
According to the university, eligibility will depend on residency, enrollment status, and household income. The institution said it will define specific income thresholds and additional criteria before the program launches. Students must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or an applicable state financial aid form to allow the university to verify income and determine eligibility.
The university stated that the program will use a combination of federal, state, and institutional financial aid to fund free tuition for qualifying students. New first-time-in-college students who enroll in fall 2026 and meet the requirements may apply through the standard financial aid process. Students who enroll before fall 2026 will not receive retroactive benefits under the program.
University officials said current Texas high school students planning to attend the University of North Texas in 2026 or later may qualify if they meet the requirements at the time of enrollment.
The university said it will release additional details on income limits, renewal requirements, academic standards, and duration of eligibility before implementation.
