Opal Lee, known as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” has written an open letter to former President Donald Trump, inviting him to engage more deeply with the Juneteenth holiday and its historical significance.

Lee’s message seeks to promote understanding and unity in the country by fostering education about the holiday and its importance.

Lee has been a key figure in the movement to recognize Juneteenth as a federal holiday. The holiday commemorates June 19, 1865, the day enslaved African Americans in Texas learned of their freedom, a pivotal moment in American history.

In her letter, Lee invites Trump to participate in Juneteenth celebrations and emphasizes the value of awareness and reflection on the nation’s past to build a more inclusive future.

She believes education can help bridge gaps between communities and promote a deeper understanding of the holiday’s significance.

James Riddlesperger, a professor at Texas Christian University, praised Lee for her lifelong contributions and the impact of her work, both locally and nationally.

Lee’s advocacy gained national attention when she walked from Fort Worth, Texas, to Washington, D.C., to raise awareness for Juneteenth.

Her efforts led to bipartisan support and, ultimately, the passage of the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, which President Joe Biden signed into law on June 17, 2021.

Lee’s letter to Trump focuses on education and engagement, rather than political differences. She believes that involving diverse communities in Juneteenth celebrations could foster greater unity. Her message highlights the importance of recognizing history in creating a more equitable and inclusive society.

Lee’s activism, dedicated to civil rights and community empowerment, has earned her widespread recognition.

Her efforts continue to inspire a broader conversation about racial justice and equality, and her letter represents a step toward fostering dialogue and reconciliation in the United States.
