Bexar County will begin enforcing emissions testing for gasoline vehicles starting Nov. 1 in response to growing air pollution concerns.
Under the new mandate announced by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), vehicles between 2 and 24 years old must undergo emissions testing at certified inspection stations equipped with On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) systems. These tests will measure vehicles’ emission levels and ensure compliance with federal air quality standards.
Motorists must secure an emissions certificate before registering their vehicles. Those whose vehicles fail the test will need to complete necessary repairs and pass a retest. State officials said the measure is part of a broader strategy to combat smog and protect public health.
The emissions testing initiative aligns with statewide efforts to strengthen environmental regulations. Public awareness campaigns will launch ahead of the rollout to educate residents about compliance requirements and vehicle maintenance.
Automotive repair shops are expected to help motorists prepare for testing through diagnostic and repair services.
Officials expect the program to improve air quality and reduce pollution-related health risks across Bexar County. Residents are urged to prepare early and ensure their vehicles meet emission standards before the 2026 deadline.
