EAST TEXAS, USA — A 24-year-old Texas Tech University student is building a full-scale log cabin by hand on family land east of Dallas while documenting the project online, where he has drawn nearly one million followers on social media.

Pearson Caldwell is constructing the cabin using timber harvested from his family’s property and traditional building methods. He said he works primarily alone and uses minimal modern tools, including improvised mechanical systems to move logs weighing more than 2,000 pounds.

Caldwell said he began the project in late 2023 and is building a frontier-style structure using materials such as eastern red cedar and post oak from East Texas. He said he selected the materials based on availability on the land and their structural properties.

Caldwell, who grew up on 160 acres of rural land, said he spent much of his childhood outdoors building and working in wooded areas. He said he is currently studying general business at Texas Tech University while continuing construction on the cabin.

He said the project is about half complete and he expects to finish it within the next year.

Caldwell said he documents each stage of construction through short-form videos on TikTok, where viewers follow the progress of the build.

He also said he appeared on the survival television series “Naked and Afraid” in 2025, where he worked as a shelter builder in Thailand.

Caldwell said he plans to attend Officer Candidates School for the United States Marine Corps after graduation.

He said he began the project to learn traditional building methods and to replicate techniques used in early American frontier construction.
