HOUSTON, Texas– The Texas Senate passed Senate Bill 2617 on Tuesday, requiring public schools to use “Before Christ” (B.C.) and “Anno Domini” (A.D.) when expressing dates in instructional materials and teaching practices.
The bill passed with a 22-9 vote. If enacted, the law would take effect in the 2026–2027 school year.
The legislation mandates that school districts and open-enrollment charter schools adopt policies requiring the use of B.C. and A.D. in student instruction.
It also prohibits the purchase or selection of curriculum materials that express dates in a manner inconsistent with this policy.
The bill now moves to the Texas House of Representatives for consideration.
