Texas rolls out commemorative coins, notes aimed at collectors

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas officials have unveiled new precious metal products that give residents another option for investing and collecting.

The Texas Comptroller’s Office announced the debut of the Texas Lone Star Coins, available in gold and silver. Each coin displays the Texas coat of arms along with a detailed outline of the state.

Alongside the coins, the office introduced Modern Texas Redback Gold Notes, which draw inspiration from paper money used during the Republic of Texas era. The notes incorporate genuine 24-karat gold and feature imagery of a Texas longhorn, the dome of the Texas State Capitol, and the Alamo.

Investors and collectors can purchase both the coins and the notes through the Texas Bullion Depository and select major coin retailers. The products do not function as legal tender and instead serve as bullion and collectible items.

Acting Texas Comptroller Kelly Hancock said the new offerings reflect the state’s long-standing emphasis on independence and fiscal responsibility. He said the Lone Star Coins and Modern Redbacks combine Texas symbolism with high-purity precious metals and provide a way for buyers to own items that celebrate the state’s history.

The Texas Bullion Depository, established through legislation passed during the 84th Texas Legislature in 2015, operates as a state-run precious metals depository under the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts.

Depository Administrator Macy Douglas said the program aims to honor Texas heritage while introducing more people to the services offered through the depository.

The inaugural 2025 Texas Lone Star Coins will be issued in three versions: a one-ounce gold bullion coin, a one-ounce gold proof coin, and a one-ounce silver bullion coin.

The Modern Texas Redback Gold Notes will be released in three denominations based on gold content: a 5-centigram note featuring the Texas longhorn, a 20-centigram note depicting the Capitol dome, and a 100-centigram note highlighting the Alamo.
