Texas lawmakers have released a draft congressional map that has prompted widespread public response and renewed attention from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).
The DOJ previously identified at least four of the state’s existing districts as potentially unconstitutional due to racial gerrymandering.
The newly proposed map would alter the boundaries of at least five congressional districts currently held by Democrats.
One area receiving particular attention is Texas’ 18th Congressional District, which includes downtown Houston and surrounding neighborhoods.
The seat is currently vacant following the passing of former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner. Under the draft proposal, the district retains its majority-Democratic makeup.
According to projections, former President Donald Trump would have carried at least 30 of Texas’ 38 congressional seats under the new map, compared to 27 in the 2024 election.
At a recent public hearing, residents expressed a range of views. Some voiced concerns about potential effects on minority representation and the possibility of reduced influence for certain communities. Others supported the proposal, citing hopes for improved local services and representation.
