Texas ranked as the second most diverse state in the United States in 2023, according to a new report released by WalletHub, a personal finance website that annually evaluates state-by-state diversity metrics.
The report assessed all 50 states across six key categories: socioeconomic, cultural, economic, household, religious, and political diversity.
Texas retained its second-place ranking from 2022, with high scores in several categories, particularly in industry, linguistic, racial, and religious diversity.
California secured the top spot on the list, while West Virginia ranked as the least diverse state.
WalletHub’s analysis highlighted Texas’s strong industry diversity and large multilingual population. The state’s Hispanic and Latino population also contributed to its high cultural diversity score. Cities such as Houston were noted for being among the most diverse urban areas in the nation.
In addition to racial and cultural indicators, the report considered economic and household diversity. These included factors such as income distribution, employment sectors, and family composition.
The annual study provides data intended to help policymakers and local leaders understand how diversity affects social and economic outcomes. The findings are available in full on WalletHub’s website.
Texas’s consistent high ranking reflects its continued growth as a culturally and economically varied state.
