The Texas Lottery Commission has released an $83.5 million Lotto Texas jackpot to a Houston-area winner following a months-long prize verification process.

The winner, who has chosen to remain anonymous, selected the lump-sum cash option of $45.8 million before taxes. The delay in awarding the prize stemmed from standard verification procedures used to confirm the legitimacy of the ticket and ensure compliance with lottery regulations.

According to officials, the process included a thorough review of the winning ticket and transaction details. The commission withheld the prize until all verification protocols were completed.

The ticket, purchased in the Houston area, was part of the Lotto Texas game, which allows players to select six numbers from 1 to 54 for a chance at large cash prizes. The jackpot is one of the largest in Texas Lottery history.

Winners in Texas are subject to federal income tax but not state income tax. The annuity option for the prize would have provided payments over 30 years, but the winner opted for the lump sum.

The Texas Lottery, established in 1992, contributes proceeds to public education and veteran services. Officials advise all winners to sign their tickets, seek financial advice, and review payout options carefully.

The release of the prize has drawn renewed attention to the lottery’s role in supporting state-funded programs and maintaining transparency in operations. The commission emphasized its commitment to fairness, security, and responsible gaming practices.
