Texas House panel pushes redistricting plan to boost GOP seats

A Texas House committee has approved a revised congressional map that analysts say could increase the number of U.S. House seats held by Republicans. The full Texas House is scheduled to review the proposal as early as Tuesday.

The redistricting effort, conducted every 10 years following the U.S. Census, realigns district boundaries to reflect population changes.

The committee’s vote moves the plan forward, with Republican leaders stating the changes comply with legal standards and address population equality. They argue the map provides fair representation across the state.

Opposition came from Democrats and voting rights advocates who contend the new map could reduce minority voting power and favor Republican candidates. Legal challenges may follow if the map is approved.

If passed by the House, the proposal will move to the state Senate. The timeline for final approval is currently uncertain.
