Texas, USA — The United States and Israel attacked Iran on Saturday in what President Donald Trump described as a massive operation aimed at degrading Iran’s military capabilities and preventing it from developing a nuclear weapon.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry said it would defend the country, and its Revolutionary Guard announced counterattacks involving drones and missiles targeting Israel, as well as strikes aimed at U.S. military installations in Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar.
In response to the developments, several Texas lawmakers issued statements:
U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas)
Cornyn said Iran has long destabilized the Middle East and expressed hope that the strikes could mark the beginning of the end of what he described as “dark days.” He voiced support for Trump and said he hoped the Iranian people would ultimately be free from oppression.
U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas)
Cruz said the action would enhance U.S. national security and praised Trump, the U.S. armed forces, the intelligence community and Israel. He accused the Iranian regime of decades of hostility toward the United States and supported efforts to prevent it from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton
Paxton thanked Trump for what he called courageous leadership and said it was critical that Iran never obtain a nuclear weapon. He added that he was praying for U.S. servicemembers.
U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-30th District)
Crockett criticized the president’s actions, arguing that Congress has the exclusive authority to declare war. She called for lawmakers to convene immediately and vote on a war powers resolution to assert congressional authority.
U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul (R-10th District)
McCaul said Iran has long supported terrorism and aligned itself with U.S. adversaries. While awaiting a detailed congressional briefing on the mission’s scope and objectives, he said the world would be safer without Iran’s current leadership and urged the Iranian people to seek change.
U.S. Rep. Troy Nehls (R-22nd District)
Nehls said he supports the operation, describing it as a stand for national security. He called for the Iranian regime to be dismantled and encouraged the Iranian people to rise up.
U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-35th District)
Doggett opposed the action, saying Trump had declared war without exhausting diplomatic options or obtaining legal authorization. He warned of the risks of a prolonged conflict and urged Congress to adopt a bipartisan war powers resolution to restrain the president’s authority.
