SAN ANTONIO — The state of Texas has approved a $5 million grant to build a rail grade separation at Frio City Road and Zarzamora Street on the Southwest Side, city officials announced.

The project, which may involve constructing an underpass or overpass, aims to improve safety by eliminating at-grade crossings between vehicles and trains. Officials said it will also reduce traffic delays, improve emergency response times, and lower the risk of collisions.

San Antonio’s project is one of five grade-separation projects statewide receiving funding through the same program. The funding was approved by the 2025 Texas Legislature under the Off-System Grade Separation Program.

“By removing any interaction between trains and traffic on the road, we can help save lives, reduce delays and strengthen the economic competitiveness of our communities,” said Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Executive Director Marc Williams.

Officials have not provided a timeline for when construction will begin.
