Texas A&M System restricts drag shows across its universities

The Texas A&M University System has announced a ban on drag performances across all its campuses.

The ban was introduced by the Texas A&M System Board of Regents, who cited concerns over the appropriateness of such events on university grounds and emphasized the importance of maintaining decorum in campus activities.

However, the Board did not provide specific incidents that led to the decision.

Drag performances, which are known for their entertainment value and cultural significance, are often part of campus life at many universities. These shows feature exaggerated costumes and performances that often incorporate comedy, satire, and themes of diversity and inclusivity.

Civil rights advocates have raised concerns that the ban may infringe upon students’ freedom of expression, pointing to the First Amendment’s protection of free speech.

Critics argue that the ban could discourage students who identify with the LGBTQ+ community and hinder efforts to create an inclusive environment on campus.
