SAN ANTONIO — Texas A&M University-San Antonio on Friday opened its new Track and Field Complex, adding a competition venue for its athletics programs as the university prepares to expand Jaguar Athletics with six new varsity sports in the 2026-27 academic year.

University President Salvador Hector Ochoa, Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai and Bexar County Commissioner Rebeca Clay-Flores joined the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the facility, which was built with support from a $10 million investment by Bexar County.

The university broke ground on the complex in February 2025. The facility includes an eight-lane competition track, a multipurpose field and a renovated softball field with a press box, dugouts and seating for 350 spectators.

Ochoa said the new facilities will support student-athletes, strengthen community engagement and help the university recruit students and expand partnerships across Texas.

The complex will serve as the practice and competition venue for the university’s men’s and women’s track and field programs, while the upgraded softball field will support recruiting and training. The university also plans to make the facilities available for community sports and recreational activities.

The opening comes as Texas A&M-San Antonio prepares to launch men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field, along with men’s and women’s cross country, beginning in the 2026-27 academic year. The university named Blair Sohl as the inaugural head coach for the new programs.

Earlier this year, the university hosted its first softball games at its new on-campus stadium. Under head coach Nicole Dame, the Jaguars finished the 2026 season with a 26-18 overall record and a 17-10 mark in Red River Athletic Conference play.

Texas A&M-San Antonio also fields teams in men’s and women’s soccer, men’s golf, and men’s and women’s basketball. The university currently has more than 130 student-athletes and expects that number to increase to nearly 200 with the addition of the new sports.

Athletics Director Darnell Smith said the new complex and expanded sports offerings will create additional opportunities for student-athletes and contribute to campus life.
