Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit against Galveston Independent School District after the district declined to display the Ten Commandments in classrooms.

The lawsuit challenges the district’s refusal to follow Senate Bill 10, a state law requiring public schools to display the Ten Commandments.

The Galveston ISD board voted not to implement the law, prompting Paxton’s legal action. He argued that the district’s noncompliance violates state law and disregards the nation’s historical moral foundations.

Paxton also stated that the separation of church and state is not explicitly written in the U.S. Constitution, supporting the display of the Ten Commandments in schools.

Before filing the lawsuit, Paxton’s office issued a legal advisory to Texas school districts to clarify Senate Bill 10 and encourage compliance.

Galveston ISD acknowledged the lawsuit and said the district is currently closed. Officials stated they will review the attorney general’s communication, consult with legal counsel, and monitor proceedings before taking further action.

The district reaffirmed its commitment to student safety, instruction, and a respectful school environment.
